Our Wood Staining Process for Decks

Pre-clean: We remove moss, debris, algae and lichen from the wood before the deep clean. We also nail down all the nails if they are protruding upwards from the surface.
Deep Clean: Then comes water-blasting which removes all dead wooden fibers and makes sure that the surface is completely clean before the staining.
Staining: Once the deck is dried, we use an oil based stain over your surface. Oil based stain is better than water based as the end finish is much better. Staining is better than just painting as it is more suited to New Zealand’s climate. It is better to stain the wood only once as a second coat does not actually stain the wood but just forms a layer on top. This layer in time will crack and peel away.
Painting: If you do not like the look or feel of wood fibers then we would suggest that you paint over the stain. Paint acts as a layer on top of the stain and provides the ultimate protection against the environment.

Staining is a very permanent solution and hence should be done by an experienced and trained professional. Pre-cleaning of the surfaces has to be done thoroughly to remove dead wood fibers, moss, dirt and debris. If this is not done correctly then the stain will only be coated on the surface and will not actually ‘stain’ the wood. HEALTH AND SAFETY

When working with stains, especially oil stains it is vital to wear gloves, a mask that covers your nose and goggles as the fumes can be quite poisonous. If you are around workers while they are staining then make sure you take the above precautions.

Conditioning and Finishing

If you do not want the stain to leave blotches on the wood then it is wise to apply a thin layer of conditioner prior to staining it. Once the stain is applied you can also apply a finish after it. The finish makes sure that the wooden surface is shiny and smooth. A finish is generally applied to wooden furniture rather than decks and outdoor trimmings.

Types of Stains

Oil based stains have a better finish than water based stains. However water stains do come in a larger variety of colours as compared to oil based ones. So choose a stain that suits your needs best.

Mixing Stains

You can try and mix two different coloured stains to make a custom colour. However make sure that the two stains are of the same brand and product type.
